During the initial phase, the government aims to construct 350,000 subsidized housing units. However, the President emphasized that the ultimate goal is to accelerate this development to reach a target of at least one million homes. “We have already made significant progress this year, completing 350,000 homes, but our target is at least one million. We are launching this one-million-home program starting this year,” President Prabowo stated during his address at the 2026 May Day celebration held at Monas Square, Central Jakarta, on Friday, May 1.

The President highlighted that many laborers currently spend up to 30 percent of their income on rent. He believes this new housing program will provide a vital, long-term solution to alleviate this financial burden. Addressing the workers, he added, “You mentioned that thirty percent of your income goes toward rent. We are committed to ensuring you will have the opportunity to own these homes.”

Addressing the financial structure of the program, President Prabowo clarified that while the housing is subsidized, it is not free. To make homeownership more attainable, the government is introducing flexible, long-term payment plans. Workers will have the option to pay installments over periods ranging from a minimum of 20 years up to a maximum of 40 years. “We want to make the installments manageable. If 20 years is not enough, we can extend it to 25, 30, 35, or even 40 years,” he explained.

In his closing remarks, the President reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the backbone of the nation—laborers, farmers, and fishermen—who remain dedicated to the country. He underscored that by providing these subsidized housing solutions, the government is investing in the welfare of those who cannot simply relocate or look elsewhere for a better life. “Laborers, farmers, and fishermen are the ones who stay. We are here to support them,” he concluded.
