Flooring Guide by Cinvex TARAKAN – Following the successful implementation of QRIS digital payments at local ports, the Bank Indonesia Representative Office (KPw) for North Kalimantan is now setting its sights on transforming the payment systems at gas stations and parking facilities across Tarakan.

This initiative aligns with the rising adoption of QRIS across North Kalimantan, a key pillar in Bank Indonesia’s broader strategy to modernize and digitalize regional payment infrastructures. While QRIS is already utilized in some parts of Bulungan, its presence in Tarakan remains inconsistent, a gap the central bank is eager to close.

“We are actively working to ensure that all gas stations in Tarakan are equipped to accept QRIS payments,” stated Hasiando Ginsar Manik, Head of KPw BI North Kalimantan, on Sunday, May 17, 2026. He noted that similar digitalization efforts have already been successfully executed in Jakarta and other parts of Java.

Addressing concerns regarding the use of mobile devices at gas stations, Hasiando emphasized that safety remains a top priority. “We have coordinated extensively with Pertamina and officials from Patra Niaga. They agree that transitioning to digital payments at gas stations is both feasible and necessary for the city’s development,” he explained.

Beyond fuel stations, the bank is prioritizing the transformation of parking fee collections. By shifting away from cash, the city aims to create a more efficient and accountable system. Hasiando highlighted that QRIS offers a seamless user experience, as it eliminates the need for cumbersome mobile banking logins, allowing for near-instant transactions.

When asked about the implementation strategy for parking, Hasiando noted that several models are being considered. Ideally, the system would utilize automated gates at parking entrances; however, mobile-based scanning performed by parking attendants also serves as a practical alternative. “The goal is to provide flexible, cashless options,” he added. “Whether through static QR codes at kiosks or handheld scanners, moving away from cash ensures that funds are accurately recorded and directed to the right channels.”

Ultimately, this digital shift is expected to enhance transparency and provide a boost to Tarakan’s Locally Generated Revenue (PAD). By minimizing opportunities for unreported transactions and reducing the prevalence of illegal parking, the initiative aims to professionalize the city’s infrastructure. “We are working closely with the Tarakan City Government to ensure this transition is effective, well-regulated, and beneficial for the public,” Hasiando concluded.
