According to Iptu Suroto, Head of Public Relations for the Tanjung Perak Port Police, the case unfolded when the victim, identified as MAF (41), was awakened by suspicious noises coming from the front of his house. Upon investigating, MAF witnessed an unknown man attempting to push his motorcycle, which had its handlebars locked, away from the property.

The suspect had reportedly damaged the motorcycle’s handlebar lock using a T-key before attempting to guide the vehicle onto the street. Realizing what was happening, the victim immediately shouted “thief!” (maling), prompting neighbors to rush out of their homes and join the pursuit of the perpetrator.

The 22-year-old suspect, identified by his initials FR, a resident of Bangkalan, was successfully apprehended by the determined residents despite putting up some resistance. In the ensuing panic, FR’s accomplice, who had been acting as a lookout, quickly fled the scene, abandoning both FR and the stolen motorcycle. The accomplice, identified only by the initial M, has since been placed on the Police’s Wanted List (DPO).

The report of the motorcycle theft swiftly reached members of the Kenjeran Police Criminal Investigation Unit who were on patrol nearby. Officers promptly arrived at the location, securing FR along with crucial evidence. This included the victim’s motorcycle, the suspect’s own motorcycle (which had been damaged by the angry mob), and the T-key used in the theft.

During initial interrogation, FR confessed that this was his second involvement in motorcycle theft. He admitted to previously stealing a motorcycle in the Tembakan area of Bubutan District, Surabaya, alongside an accomplice identified as SAI. While FR has no prior criminal convictions, this incident suggests a potentially larger criminal network. Iptu Suroto emphasized that investigations are ongoing to apprehend other perpetrators and identify those who fence stolen goods.
